Es abril de 2024 y hoy se está publicando el penúltimo ejercicio de escritura del NAPOWRIMO 2024. Ese final para todos los que escribieron un poema diario durante el mes de abril, es para mí el inicio de un nuevo ciclo de Pluma Afilada. En esta entrega leyeron el resultado del ejercicio del día 7 del NAPOWRIMO 2024, en el cual me retaron a escribir un poema titulado “Wish You Were Here” que tomara la inspiración de la idea de una postal: el poema debía ser corto, y debía jugar con la idea de viaje, la distancia o hacer turismo.
Tan pronto leí “Wish You Were Here”, recordé un texto que escribí cuando fui de paseo a Londres en unas vacaciones del colegio en el que trabajaba en Liverpool. Tuve que escarbar entre mis diarios de viaje y al releer casi todas las entradas que escribí, recordé mi estadía en ese país. Entre más leía mis propios diarios de viaje, más volvía a sentir ese “Wish You Were Here”. Hasta que encontré el texto. Estaba en la parte de atrás de un diario de viaje muy vintage que compré en la librería Foyles en Charing Cross ese mismo día luego de haber visitado el Museo de Historia Natural en Londres. Al leerlo de mi puño y letra, me tropecé con otro sentir que ha cambiado con el tiempo. Y me tropecé también con esa Carolina que había escrito eso en el 2007. En cierto sentido, me sentí otra leyendo esas líneas versales conjugadas en presente. Así que, deliberadamente, reescribí el texto con más intención que nunca. Reescribí el texto no solo para mejorar la forma o la musicalidad. Reescribir significó situarme en este ahora y cambiar la conjugación gramatical para señalar eso: la que escribe en abril de 2024 ha cambiado siendo la misma.

Por otro lado, quisiera compartir que antes de empezar este nuevo ciclo de Pluma Afilada, he revisado todo lo que he publicado en este boletín. De 30 ejercicios de escritura propuestos en el NAPOWRIMO 2023, escribí 13. Fueron los ejercicios que más me gustaron porque me permitieron jugar más con las palabras. Quedaron rezagados los ejercicios que proponían escribir sonetos o nonetos o shanties. Aún me cuesta mucho trabajo las estructuras versales rimadas, a pesar de haber tomado un curso sobre ello.
Al escribir estos ensayos, me he interesado por aprender a escribirlos mejor. Creo que este tipo de prosa me permite aclarar, hilar y organizar mejor mis ideas. Escribir mensualmente también detonó chispas de interés en varios temas que me gustaría explorar más con los ensayos personales. Así que estoy contenta al darme cuenta de que sí estoy logrando un ritmo para escribir, reescribir, editar, traducir y publicar mensualmente. Todo esto no hubiese sucedido, si no me hubiese atrevido a escribir no sólo los poemas sino estos ensayos mensualmente. Este esfuerzo está valiendo la pena.
Finalmente, pero no menos importante, me siento en profunda gratitud con todos los que reciben los textos de Pluma Afilada en sus correos electrónicos, los que se toman una pausa para leer y los que me comparten sus impresiones después de leerlos. Todos, sin excepción, se han convertido en mis interlocutores. Muchas gracias por estar, por leer, por dejarse tocar con las palabras, por completar mi proceso creativo con su lectura.
It’s April 2024 and today the second to last writing prompt from NAPOWRIMO 2024 has been published. It’s the end for all those who wrote a poem daily during April 2024. But for me, it’s the beginning of a new cycle for this newsletter Pluma Afilada. In this installment, you read the result of the Day 7 writing prompt. It challenges me to write a poem titled Wish You Were Here that “takes its inspiration from the idea of a postcard. Consistent with the abbreviated format of a postcard, your poem should be short and should play with the idea of travel, distance, or sightseeing”.
As soon as I read “Wish You Were Here”, I recalled a text I wrote when I went sightseeing in London during a school break while working in Liverpool. I had to dig in my travel journals and when rereading the entries I wrote, I remembered my stay in the UK. The more I read my travel journals, the more I felt that “Wish You Were Here” feeling. Until I found the text. It was at the back of a vintage travel journal I had bought at Foyles bookshop in Charing Cross after visiting the Natural History Museum in London. When reading it from my handwriting, I stumbled upon another feeling that has changed over time. Also, I ran into a Carolina who had written it back in 2007. In a sense, I felt like another person reading those lines in the present tense. So, deliberately, I rewrote the text with more intention than ever. I rewrote it not only to improve the form or the musicality. Rewriting this poem meant to position myself in this now and therefore, change the grammar tenses to depict that precisely: the one who writes in April 2024 has changed while being the same.

On another note, I’d like to share that before beginning this new cycle of Pluma Afilada, I revised all that I have published in this newsletter. From 30 writing prompts from NAPOWRIMO 2023, I wrote 13 poems. Those were the prompts I liked the most because I could play the most with words. Writing sonnets or nonnets or shanties were left behind… I’m still struggling with those rhyming structures despite a course I took on the formal aspects of the verse in a poem.
Writing these essays has also made me want to write them better. This prose allows me to clarify, organize, and knit my ideas better. Writing monthly also “triggered” sparks of interest in several topics I would like to explore more with personal essays. I’m glad to realize I am achieving a certain rhythm to writing, rewriting, editing, translating, and publishing monthly. All of this wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t dared to monthly write the poems but these essays. So all this effort is worthwhile :)
